Electrical/Non PCM Flash Inspection and Repair

Mississauga drivers will be happy to know that at Team Chrysler we can complete the inspection and repair of your engine control modules, or ECMs. The term "flashing" refers to your automotive engine control modules (ECMs) being reprogrammed. ECMS are used in all late-model vehicles.

PCMs refer to powertrain control modules, which are small-sized computers with RAM memory, a microprocessor, output drives, sensor input chips, and a programmable read-only memory chip, or PROM. With flashing, the ECM's PROM part is calibrated and set to run with a particular engine. The ECM powers up in the same way a desktop personal computer starts, and when you first turn on the ignition in your car to start it, the ECM starts. The ECM microprocessor reads the PROM and then calibrates all components to control an engine and powertrain.

In earlier decades the ECM recalibration was achieved by reprogramming an erasable programmable read-only memory, which was called an EDPROM. After the late 1990s the repair method included programming and electric erasing, followed by the next step which was flashing. With flash technology, the flash-PROM can now be deleted in reprogrammed in a single step. All of the data being inputted to the flash-PROM is verified while the flash is reprogramming to ensure accuracy.

We can handle the programming of your vehicle's ECM, and since almost all new vehicles currently are flash programmable, we have the specialized equipment to carry it out. This includes our own desktop personal computer, the harness/cable set with the CD of the calibration software, a programming power supply, and our automotive scan tool. When this all works together we can easily fill all of your automotive programming needs.

To verify and program your engine control modules in the flash programming procedure, we select the right harness/cables for the application, connect the off-board programmer to the ECM, and power up the flash system. We then enter your vehicle's model, make, VIN number and year once the flash software appears on our personal computer.

Once the flash software powers up on our personal computer, we enter your vehicle's make, model, year and VIN number. Then we verify and program your ECM.
